Tammy Briant Spratling
Tammy Briant is a visiting assistant professor in the ºÚÁϱ¬ÁÏ’s College of Education and an active member of the Tampa Bay legal community. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Stetson University College of Law, Florida State University College of Law and the University of Tampa.
Briant’s research examines the intersection of law, institutional policy and student wellness in higher education, with a particular focus on graduate and professional students. Drawing on her background as an attorney, student affairs administrator and equity-focused nonprofit leader, her work explores how colleges and universities develop, interpret and operationalize policies related to student support, behavioral intervention, basic needs and institutional responsibility. She is especially interested in how legal frameworks, both formal, such as statutory and regulatory law, and institutional, including codes of conduct, behavioral policies and housing contracts, shape students’ access to resources, sense of safety and belonging, and overall well-being. Her scholarship aims to advance ethically grounded, legally informed and equity-driven systems of student support that honor student dignity while equipping practitioners and policymakers to navigate complex legal and ethical landscapes.
Her areas of expertise include higher education law and policy, equity in higher education, ethics and student wellness. In addition to her research and teaching, Briant supports program administration by assisting Dr. Amber Dumford with the Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration program.
Prior to joining USF, Briant served as assistant dean for student affairs at Stetson University College of Law, where she provided leadership for student affairs, residential life and mental health teams. She also served as deputy Title IX coordinator and chair of the law school’s Behavioral Intervention Team. Earlier in her career, she worked as an assistant state attorney in the Child Welfare Division of the Sixth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
Briant is a member of the Florida Bar and the American Bar Association and is a past member of the board of directors for the Hillsborough County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. She currently serves on the board of directors for Abe Brown Ministries and is a graduate of Leadership Tampa’s Class of 2014.
Committed to community service, Briant engages in pro bono work with Bay Area Legal Services’ Family Forms Clinic, Wills for Heroes and Crossroads for Kids, where she serves as an attorney ad litem for teens in foster care. She is also the past president of the board of directors for the Gasparilla International Film Festival, where she chaired the Global Lens Series, an initiative focused on cultural exchange through international film.
Briant earned dual bachelor’s degrees in criminology and government and world affairs from the University of Tampa and received her Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law.
